InsightX - Beyond the Model was a Data Science and Machine Learning workshop designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practice. Organized by IEEE LETs talk in collaboration with IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka, and powered by IFS, the workshop aimed to provide participants with practical exposure to the rapidly evolving fields of Data Science and Machine Learning.
The workshop was structured to take participants beyond theoretical concepts by exploring how data-driven solutions are approached, developed, and implemented within real-world environments. The program combined industry perspectives, career guidance, discussion, and practical learning, allowing participants to understand both the opportunities available within the field and the skills required to navigate them.
The event featured three main sessions: an expert-led opening session, a panel discussion titled “The Data Science Career Playbook,” and a hands-on technical session titled “From Data to Deployment: An End-to-End ML Solution.” Together, these sessions provided participants with perspectives spanning machine learning engineering, data science careers, analytics, and the practical development of ML solutions.

InsightX commenced with an expert-led keynote exploring how Data Science and Machine Learning are applied within real-world organizational environments. The session introduced participants to the modern Data Science workflow, from identifying problems and developing solutions to deployment and monitoring. It also highlighted how different technical roles collaborate throughout the process, giving participants a clearer understanding of industry practices and expectations.
The Data Science Career Playbook
The panel discussion brought together industry professionals to share their experiences and perspectives on building careers in Data Science and Machine Learning. The discussion covered career pathways, employer expectations, portfolio development, internships, certifications, technical interviews, and common challenges faced by fresh graduates. An interactive Q&A session allowed participants to engage directly with the panelists and gain practical advice drawn from their professional journeys.
From Data to Deployment: An End-to-End ML Solution
The programme concluded with a two-hour hands-on session built around an industry-inspired Machine Learning use case. Participants worked through dataset preparation, feature engineering, model development, evaluation, and deployment considerations using practical workflows. By the end of the session, they had developed a portfolio-ready Machine Learning project while gaining a stronger understanding of the complete ML lifecycle.
