CodeBridge - The Pathway to Software Engineering
CodeBridge – The Pathway to Software Engineering was a technical workshop designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world software engineering practices. Through a keynote, an interactive panel discussion, and a hands-on engineering challenge, the event provided participants with a comprehensive learning experience spanning modern software development, career readiness, and practical engineering workflows.

Event Overview
CodeBridge – The Pathway to Software Engineering was a Software Engineering technical workshop designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practice. Organized by IEEE LETs talk in collaboration with IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka, and powered by IFS, the workshop aimed to provide participants with practical exposure to modern software engineering workflows, industry tools, and professional development practices.
The workshop was structured to take participants beyond university-level programming by exploring how software is designed, developed, tested, and delivered within real-world engineering environments. The programme combined technical knowledge, career guidance, industry perspectives, and hands-on learning, helping participants understand the engineering mindset and competencies required to navigate the modern software industry.
The event featured three main sessions: an expert-led keynote titled “Evolving World of Software Engineering,” a panel discussion titled “Breaking Into Tech: What Actually Gets You Hired,” and a hands-on practical session titled “The Engineer Challenge: Design, Build and Deliver.” Together, these sessions explored the journey from academic programming to production-level software engineering, career preparation, and the practical development of a portfolio-ready software engineering project.
By combining industry expertise with practical learning, CodeBridge provided participants with an opportunity to strengthen their technical understanding, gain insight into industry expectations, and develop skills relevant to their transition from university to professional software engineering.
Key Highlights
Evolving World of Software Engineering
CodeBridge commenced with an expert-led keynote exploring the transition from university-level coding to production-level software engineering. The session introduced participants to industry expectations surrounding quality, scalability, collaboration, and maintainability while examining the software engineering workflow from requirements analysis and design to development, testing, deployment, and continuous improvement. It also highlighted systems thinking, debugging strategies, and practical problem-solving approaches used within
Breaking Into Tech: What Actually Gets You Hired
The panel discussion brought together industry professionals to share practical perspectives on preparing for internships and entry-level software engineering roles. The discussion covered technical competency, communication, meaningful projects, GitHub portfolios, CV screening, technical interviews, and common mistakes made during internship applications. An interactive Q&A allowed participants to engage directly with the panelists and gain career advice based on real industry experience.
The Engineer Challenge: Design, Build and Deliver
The program concluded with a 90-minute hands-on engineering challenge centered on developing a structured software engineering solution. Participants worked through a real-world problem statement and followed a guided development workflow using tools such as GitHub, AWS, Postman, and AI-assisted development technologies. The session enabled participants to apply engineering concepts in practice while working towards a portfolio-ready project.
