Event Overview

On the 01st of March 2026, the IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka proudly hosted its annual IEEE Sri Lanka Section Volunteer Onboarding at TRACE Expert City, Maradana. The session brought together volunteers from various Organizational Units (OUs), which included volunteers from the IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka, SLSAC (Sri Lanka Section Student Activity Committee), IEEE WIE Sri Lanka Section and IEEE Sri Lanka Section Sight.

The event commenced at 10:00 a.m. and was enriched by the presence of Professor Tharaka Samarasinghe, the Chairperson of IEEE Sri Lanka Section, who enlightened the participants with an insightful introduction to IEEE Sri Lanka section. This included an overview of the IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka, highlighting its past achievements, key events, and the structure and roles of its various subcommittees.

Key Highlights

Following the insightful introduction, were interactive games and sessions that encouraged active participation from every member, fostering teamwork and collaboration. The program began with an engaging icebreaker session, setting a welcoming start to everyone present.

Teams were organized based on national projects and subcommittee roles. Following the icebreaker, a quiz session was held. Each team had been assigned a unique theme three days earlier, with themes including Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and Naruto. Each team had to prepare a set of questions related to their theme. During the quiz, one member from each team presented their questions, while a designated “runner” from other teams ran forward to answer. Correct answers earned points, and the team with the highest score for each round received a token from the presenting team. This process was repeated for all teams, making the session lively and competitive.

This was followed by a series of acting sessions, where each team creatively performed a scene based on their assigned theme. Every member took on a character role, introducing themselves in alignment with their chosen character. The session was highly engaging and entertaining, filled with laughter and memorable moments. After each performance, a team introduction video prepared beforehand was presented, adding a polished touch to the session. These sessions additionally allowed participants to introduce themselves, paving the way for new friendships and collaborations amongst each other.

Following the acting session, each team was given the opportunity to participate in an engaging and entertaining game, where the objective was to place a bottle as far as possible from a designated line. The bottle was fastened to a piece of string, and one member from each team was chosen to place the bottle as far as they could while strictly remaining behind the marked boundary. The participant was supported by their teammates, who held onto them and worked together to extend their balance and distance as far as possible without crossing the line. This required physical coordination, trust, and effective communication within the team. The game proved to be both fun and highly engaging, encouraging competitiveness, quick thinking, strategic coordination, and teamwork, while also creating many hilarious and memorable moments.

The final session was an online quiz hosted via Kahoot. It featured a collective blend of questions based on the teams’ assigned themes, along with those providing insight into the IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka Section and its initiatives. Topics such as the event’s launch, its core objectives, and related activities were covered. At the end of the session, the top five scorers were given the opportunity to collect a designated number of tokens from each team. Finally, the total number of tokens won by each team were counted, and the team that earned the most number of tokens were presented vouchers as a token.
