Niwaradhi Dishanathiya: Guiding Students Towards the Right A/L Stream

On 22 March 2026, IEEE SLInspire successfully conducted "Niwaradhi Dishanathiya", a virtual career guidance program designed to support students who had recently completed their G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L) examination and were preparing to make one of the most important decisions in their academic journey-selecting an Advanced Level (A/L) stream.

Selecting an A/L stream plays a significant role in shaping a student's future academic and professional journey. Recognizing the challenges and uncertainties many students face during this critical period, IEEE SLInspire organized this initiative to provide participants with a clearer understanding of the available A/L streams, university pathways, and career opportunities associated with each field.

Conducted via Zoom, the program attracted more than 50 participants for each session, including students, parents, and teachers from across Sri Lanka. The session focused on helping participants make informed decisions by providing comprehensive insights into the five major A/L streams, the subjects offered under each stream, and the academic and professional opportunities available thereafter.

The program featured a panel of university undergraduates representing the five major A/L streams, each sharing valuable insights into their respective academic pathways, university experiences, and future career pathways.

Representing the Biology stream, Mr. Sasmith Keerthirathna, an MBBS undergraduate from the University of Peradeniya, provided participants with a comprehensive overview of the Biology stream. He discussed the academic requirements of the field, potential university pathways, and the diverse career opportunities available in healthcare, life sciences, and related disciplines. His session helped students understand both the challenges and rewards associated with pursuing Biology at the Advanced Level.

The Commerce stream session was conducted by Mr. Chamika Dhahanayake, a BSc (Hons) in Finance undergraduate from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. He highlighted the opportunities available in finance, accounting, management, marketing, entrepreneurship, and related fields while explaining how Commerce education can lead to a wide range of professional careers. His practical insights enabled participants to better understand the relevance of Commerce in today’s dynamic business environment.

Representing the Technology stream, Mr. Amila Prasad, a BSc Physical Science undergraduate from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, introduced participants to the opportunities available through the Technology stream. He discussed emerging fields, industry demands, and academic pathways related to technology, innovation, and engineering, helping students gain a broader understanding of the prospects offered by this rapidly evolving field.

The Arts stream was represented by Ms. Tashi Jayawardhana, a BA (Hons) in Economics undergraduate from the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. During her session, she addressed common misconceptions regarding Arts education and highlighted the broad spectrum of academic and professional opportunities available within the field. Her presentation encouraged students to recognize their strengths and interests while exploring the diverse possibilities offered through Arts-related disciplines.

Mr. Basuru Lokuge, a BSc Physical Science ICT undergraduate from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, conducted the session on the Physical Science stream. He provided participants with valuable insights into subject combinations, university degree programs, and career pathways related to mathematics, physical sciences, computing, and technology. His session emphasized the importance of analytical thinking and problem-solving skills in pursuing careers within scientific and technological sectors.

One of the key highlights of the program was the interactive discussion segment conducted at the end of each session. Participants actively engaged with the speakers by raising questions regarding subject selection, university admissions, career opportunities, and future educational prospects. These discussions created a supportive environment where students could seek clarification and receive practical advice tailored to their individual concerns and aspirations.

The program received highly positive feedback from students, parents, and teachers who participated in the event. Many attendees expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to hear directly from university students who had successfully navigated similar academic choices. Participants noted that the sessions helped reduce uncertainty surrounding A/L stream selection while providing a clearer understanding of the academic and professional pathways available to them.

"Niwaradhi Dishanathiya" successfully achieved its objective of empowering students with the knowledge, confidence, and guidance required to select an A/L stream that aligns with their interests, strengths, and long-term aspirations. By creating a platform for meaningful knowledge sharing and mentorship, the program enabled participants to approach their future academic decisions with greater confidence and clarity.
